Ear mites are a very common problem in most pet, and as such most owners will have to learn how to get rid of them at some point. The symptoms of these little critters will include scratching, shaking their heads, and a black or reddish-brown buildup of wax in the ear. There are number of things that can be done in order to get rid of this problem, so consider the following tips.
The first thing to do is to make sure that a proper diagnosis of the year might is actually done. You should be able to notice the above symptoms, but it will also be a good idea to take your animal to your local vet so that they can fully diagnose the problem.
Your vet will then be able to offer you advice as to what ear mites treatments are available for your pet. The first thing that they may suggest for you to do is to use a dropper to distribute lukewarm mineral oil into your pets inner ear. This will help to break down the buildup of wax so that you can remove it after a few hours using a cotton ball.
After this you will need to use some sort of insecticide in order to actually get rid of the ear mites. In most cases any sort of over-the-counter insecticide should be suitable for this purpose, but your vet may well suggest that you get a description. Unless the problem is very severe, this should be unnecessary and therefore you may want to start with an over-the-counter product.
Make sure that you are very patient when using any product. It may well take several weeks for the ear mites to disappear and therefore you shouldn’t be too downhearted if they tend to stick around for a while. Simply follow the instructions on the medication that you have got closely and the results will come in time.
Always treat all of the animals within your house as well, even if they do not seem to be showing any symptoms. It is best to do this rather than have to treat them later on if they do develop the problem, which can be contagious.
