As a frequent visitor to cat forums, a topic that comes up way too regularly is that of cat dandruff. It’s a nuisance that affects most of us cat lovers, and if you own a cat, it’s a matter of time before you have to look into it.
But worry not, there may be a cat dandruff cure that you can use without burning a hole in your pocket, just by observing the symptoms and environment and taking action based on these symptoms. It is important to confirm first that your problem is not instead cat dander.
Most cat dandruff issues have in common three things:
1. The cat dandruff appears on the rump or tail and your cat is ageing or overweight.
If your kitty is over-weight or has a sudden increase in weight and dandruff on her rump and tail, most likely she’s not able to reach these areas to clean herself. This is also an issue for aged cats that lack the mobility to groom themselves.
Simply brush you cat and I suggest you groom her every couple of months. If you decide to give your cat a bath, please do not use human shampoos as that might dry her skin further and exacerbate the condition. Always use a cat shampoo and remember to wash thoroughly as remaining shampoo stuck on her undercoat may start the problem all over again.
2. The weather is cold and dry
If your cat only has dandruff issues in winter, then it could be the result of the cold and dry weather. To compond the problem, the majority of cats like to laze about in the warm comforts of the fireplace, which rapidly dries her skin causing it to flake.
I suggest you move her away from the fireplace every once in a while and observe if the problem persists. Purchasing a humidifier would be a good idea, both for your kitty and also yourself (we get dry skin too…)
3. The cat dandruff is still around after trying out everything
If none of the above apply, just think, have you bought any new furniture lately? A new rug maybe? Check if there are any changes to her environment that she might be sensitive to and try to make the necessary adjustments.
